What I personally found is that black mascara on my lower lashes, other than waterproof mascara, flakes under my eyes. Brown, mascara not so much. It's hard to find brown these days, but I took to wearing black on my upper lashes and brown on the lower.

Alternatively, you could try going to a lash salon and get the false lashes. I see this on a lot of the younger women at work and they all have beautiful eye lashes. I think they have options for longer wear so you don't have to don new ones every day. If having them done at a salon doesn't appeal to you, you can also apply them yourself at home. One of the women I work with does this and her eyelashes also look beautiful.

I don't wear any mascara on my bottom lashes at all, but they're dark anyway.

I’ve never had trouble with my mascara smudging and have always used Maybelline Great Lash, but recently my sister sent me some “They’re Real” mascara. This stuff is great - no smudging and my thinning lashes look thicker.

Does anyone know how long unopened makeup/skincare lasts?

On the back of the package, in tiny print, there might be a picture of a small jar with 6M or 12M inside of it. This means the preservatives are good for 6 to 12 months after opening. But not all products have that on the packaging. Regarding makeup, cream or liquid products don’t last as long as powder. However, I keep my powder products for a long time. I spritz them with alcohol periodically. Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly helps, something I’m guilty of not doing! Mascara should be replaced every month. I think sunscreen is good for a year.

I think this is sad:

Revlon files for bankruptcy...

Revlon makes my favorite lipsticks. I remember when Max Factor was a big brand for decades and then it was discontinued in the US. I used to love their mascaras!

Revlon Super Lustrous Creme lipstick in Rum Raisin is one of my favorites.
