Yoga v stretching

Thoughts on substituting stretching for yoga in a rotation? Presuming rest of rotation includes strength and cardio. Thanks!

Depending on the nature of the yoga in your rotation, you might be missing out on balance work and/or core work by substituting stretching. I'd say, assuming there is specific yoga included with the rotation, either do the yoga once or preview it, and see what it's like.

It’s great to change workout styles Both for the physical and mental benefits. There are some great stretching workouts like Lastics, Cool it Off and Perfect in 10 Stretch, among many others.

It’s good for the body to have a rest and a change from yoga poses. Athletic stretching still works flexibility, but in a less strenuous way.

I'm a lazy stretcher. I don't like the standing stretches in yoga. I prefer sitting and lying stretches because I want to relax, and many yoga poses don't relax me.

I would agree that it depends on the purpose of the type of yoga in the rotation. Like if it's yin yoga it might be easier to substitute with other stretch workouts but if it's balance work the substitute wouldn't accomplish the same goal.

For me, after I run most yoga doesn't accomplish how I need to stretch. I have one practice that really does, but otherwise regular stretching works better if I don't use that practice.

So it just depends on what you're trying to accomplish, IMO.

I don't do yoga, I always do athletic stretch, and I love it, when I skip it due to laziness, I notice. There are other ways to work on balance if needed. I also love mobility practices and foam rolling. When an official rotation include yoga, I always do stretch instead, I have several dvds in different lengths, I just choose what I feel like doing that day, or depending on how I feel.

True you can work on balance in other ways, but if the program has a yoga practice scheduled that includes balance work specifically for the program you would just have to add on in order to get the balance work. Still would work, just might take extra time.

Most of the rotations I have done includes yoga on Sundays (as "rest or yoga"), as a recovery aid, 10 minute or so of sun salutations and chaturangas doesn't sound relaxing to me, it is probably good though, but if I want to relax my muscles and give them a break from the strength and cardio done during the week, a simple stretch sounds better to me. I also thing that you can substitute a workout in a rotation here and there if you don't like the scheduled one, by doing so, I don't think you are losing something, better to do something you enjoy and will stick to, instead of dreading a particular workout, make a rotation your own. I don't like yoga personally, but I like doing flexibility workouts and know how important they are. Do whatever you enjoy! It is awesome to have so many options.

Oh, I agree, for sure! I was just thinking of it in the context of trying to do a program for the intended benefit/purpose of the rotation as designed. I'm all for doing what your body asks for! (Well, any movement it asks for, not being a slug on the couch 24/7. )
