This post breaks my heart. How horrible that an 88-year-old man is suffering from domestic abuse. Someone needs to put a stop to it. Isn't there an elderly abuse agency one discreetly can call to put an end to this abuse? Someone needs to protect your father.

Her children probably suffered abuse also. They probably can't stand to be around her. The whole lot of them seem to be inconsiderate of other people. I don't know her, and I can't stomach her behavior.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

What a heartbreaking nightmare! I have a friend who was in an eerily similar situation. Finally, the mother took such a bad fall that she was forced to go in to a care home.

Hugs to you for hanging in there for your Dad!

Perhaps your Dad's doctor could talk to your Dad for the sake of your Dad's health. quite often, if a patient (stepmom) who needs care but whose home situation depends on another elderly person, the doc would order some type of home care. and "hire" would not come out of your pocket - medicare will cover this help.

your dad can be home when this person comes around so that he could supervise. it might be good training for your Dad to have a home health person come in because they can also teach the caregivers how to do things like proper lifting, toileting techniques, etc.

with respect to HIPAA, you don't need to ask the doctor for details - just tell doc that the situation at home is not ideal for your dad's health.

I think it would be good to have a family reunion with your Dad and sisters to try to convince him that the situation can't continue like that, maybe he feel "guilty" about sending her to a home care, but at his age he needs to take care of himself as well. Maybe giving your stepmom an "ultimatum" that she has two choices only, letting someone come home to help or going to a home care, she would then decide to accept the help (?) I do hope that things will change for the better.

Dad just called and asked if I'd like a tomato plant. I said "sure", but then he called right back (I could hear Betty hollering in the background) and said I couldn't have one after all because Betty had promised them to her kids....(probably in appreciation of all the help they've been...&#129315...

Quick update- Betty fell in the bathroom again on Saturday. Dad called the fire department like he usually does but this time when they came to the house they said they can no longer come out and get her off the floor. They called an ambulance and she was taken to the hospital. It sounds like the doctor doesn’t want her going home until she gets physical therapy and can walk on her own. That won’t happen, though - she refuses to do physical therapy, so I’m not sure what they’re going to do, but at least Dad has a little peace of mind for now.

Gams, I am so sorry for your father. I hope he can get some rest while she is in the hospital.
