Building up to Crow Pose/Bakasana

One of my ultimate yoga goals is to be able to hold Crow Pose for a decent amount of time (say, 30 seconds at least). I know the saying goes, "you gotta do it to be good at it." Currently I can hold it for maybe 1 or 2 seconds. Are there any good yoga practices (DVDs or YouTube) that have a good buildup or progression to be able to get into a decent Crow Pose?

I don't know of a specific build-up-to-crow program or workout, but I know I was able to hold it the longest when I was doing a combination of Murph prep workouts (strength and metcon kind of stuff) and Lesley Fightmaster's 30 day beginner's yoga challenge. I'll edit this post and put the link to Lesley's YouTube challenge. That was such a great feeling mentally to achieve that!

Livinleggings on Youtube has really good tutorials in general, including some on Crow, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLbdPAA7sr4

Hope this helps.

Since you can get it but can’t hold it, chances are it would help to have your knees higher towards your armpits- hip openers will help with that. Core strength is everything, of course, but also core activation. So make sure you’re doing a good warmup with some core ( not enough to get tired, just enough to wake up the muscles) and plenty of hip openers, before you go into bakasana.

Thanks Anna! I've found a few more tutorials that I have bookmarked.

Thanks Laura! Now I wonder if I have any practices in my collection that feature a gradual build up to warm up the core and open up the hips before trying Bakasana.

Garrie, not sure if this will help, but I remember a yoga teacher I had a few classes with suggesting using a stack of blankets or a block in front of you to rest your head on when working up to holding the pose. The idea was that you needed to position your body much more forward than you realized to get into/hold crow and the block/blankets under the head facilitated that while making you feel supported (no face plants, hah!). I'm sure there are probably videos out there on that.

Aside from that, I fully agree with everything Laura said.
