I'd be inclined to first work on ankle, hip and t-spine mobility in order to improve squat depth and see where that takes her.

I'm of the opinion that if she will use it, and it causes her to exercise more consistently, and she can afford it, go for it.

I agree that if it will motivate her to do squats and to do them correctly (and she wants to spend the money) it doesn't hurt. But, it's not necessary. I agree with the suggestions about using the chair, the tall box, or wall sits. I was instructed once by a physical therapist to start by squatting down into the chair and then getting back up slowly; you can hold onto a vertical broomstick or body bar for stability while you do it. Another thing that I've done is to do squats standing behind the chair and moving my hands up and down the chair as I squat up and down. For what it's worth (and I doubt that the friend here falls into this category) one of my relatives is always asking me about the latest gadget because she's looking for an "easy" way to do something.

Squats often bother the lower back in a lot of people, so it is good to hang onto something especially at first. I actually used a towel wrapped around a tree in my yard.

I'm now able to do regular squats so no longer do that, plus it's winter.

Hopefully she can find something to hang onto.

She's been appreciating all of your feedback. Thank you all! And yes, I agree that it looks too wobbly and unstable for the price.
