I definitely think purging in stages works best for me.So I always recommend a staging or purgatory area first. Let the idea of it being gone settle for a bit. You're the boss of you so figure out how long it would take. Most stuff I set aside for about a month, bigger items usually simmer longer . Honestly, most of the time I start to add something else when I remove the items that are there because I'm so ready to have them leave )

Then when you return to the area they formerly occupied you can register how it feels. Are you relieved? Do you even notice?

I will also say that my fitness equipment usually gets repurposed for other exercises. Currently using my Danskin weighted balls to work out muscle soreness in my quads and very happy I didn't purge them.

I gave away my Fluidity Barre and dvds last year. Best decision ever. Now I'm purging dvds I don't use...along with clothing and bikes. It feels good.

I have some things I am considering getting rid of, mainly my slanted risers but want to make sure before I do so. But I bought them years ago and have barely used them.

I also have an old step box that I am considering getting rid of but step boxes are hard to find these days, and I have my club step that I would keep but do I really need two?

Those are the main things, I would keep my dumbells for sure, plus I am using bands a lot more these days. Someone mentioned weighted balls, those I would never part with either. Same with my High Step.

Plus I have some DVDs I am considering parting with, including some out of print ones. Right now I am battling some injuries so need to determine if I will be able to do them and if I can, will I want to do them. I am at the age where I may just want to change or modify things going forward, or be realistic about what I am going to use going forward.

Good thread.

If you have been seeing a PT, maybe you could ask him/her for some strengthening exercises for your foot using the Step 360, and then when ready doing them on the Bosu (which is harder than the Step 360), I know a lot use them for rehabilitation, which I think would be handy for you now (?).

I recently redecorated my bedroom and did a big purge, not just fitness stuff. But because it was a part of a bigger cleanup, it was easier to get whittle my collection down (pretty drastically). I was motivated to create a minimalist and peaceful bedroom, and clutter didn’t fit that.

I've cut down on my home fitness equipment also - I had kettlebells, a 40' rope, a 40 lb sandbag, a Bosu, and many DVDs. I donated these to a local boxing gym that was expanding into some general fitness - they loved it. I still have my exercise ball, TRX, some hand weights, some styrofoam rollers and yoga blocks and mats - this does well for me when I'm now in my 60s. I'll be moving to a senior co-op probably in two years that is having a gym built into it, so plan on further downsizing when I move there - I still have some videos.

I also need to purge - bosu, fluidity bar, rebounder (but I think I want to utilize this!), lots of accessory type things (bands and such), as well as miscellaneous instructors'' dvds that I have never even tried UGH. I have a lot of yoga that I think I want to keep, but my wrist is often hurting after doing it, so I don't know abut those yet. I think I'm just going to keep the dvds for only a few instructors and purge the rest - just trying to decide which dvds (for instance, do I really want the Leslie dvds with bands/weights or only walking?)
Thanks for some of the good ideas here!

I think I have a real attachment/hoarding problem. Just hearing about OTHER people getting rid of things makes me feel anxious and sick! I can't bear to let go of my fitness stuff unless it's duplicate DVDs.

It doesn’t help that for the past couple of years it was hard to find many things. It still can be for certain things. And everything is getting more and more expensive by the day, so may be hard to replace. And some things made more recently tending to be lower quality. I’m thinking carefully before getting rid of anything these days, unless it’s something I haven’t used in a decade or more.
