That's great, Sheepla! I also live exactly 1.2 miles from work and although I have walked to work a few times, I cannot make it a regular practice because of crazy drivers. There is an intersection I have to cross mid-way that is always busy and although I obey all the pedestrian laws, I have almost been hit a few times by people driving way too fast or not being aware of their surroundings and being oblivious to me crossing the street. I was going to get a moped a couple years ago to drive to work during the summer months, but my loving boyfriend begged me not to because he was afraid I'd be killed at that intersection some day.
Your post has me wanting to try walking to work again though, especially since summer seems to have finally arrived (we've been rain soaked and experiencing below normal temps since April). Maybe I'll just have to find a way around the intersection and/or wear my boyfriend's orange hunting gear so nobody can claim they can't see me.
