I have them all and use them frequently. Very convenient and delightful. Reminders, timers, weather, music and podcasts, turning on lights, tvs, volume, blinds... I like to make my home automagical. And especially in the case of Google home, getting decent answers to questions. It's just a voice interface to things you'd normally do with your phone. It's not spying nearly as much as simply browsing the web.
It's kind of fun to write programs for the Echo and the Google Home as well. But you can do a lot with just basic built-in actions. If I want to have Alexa answer the question 'Who's in charge?' with 'Nancy,' it's pretty simple. When either of us says 'Good Morning,' Alexa turns on the lights and tv, and tells us the weather. At times I add having her say cute things to DH to that routine.
