Seeking Anxiety Relief

Over the last few months, I've developed a bit of an anxiety problem. I'm not having panic attacks or anything remotely like that. I just feel nervous, anxious. It kind of feels like I'm watching a suspense movie. I don't know exactly what is going on, but I have been going through a lot of stress lately. I'm going to talk about this with my doctor tomorrow, but I believe I can manage it without medication if I just focus on doing what's best for me.

Anyway, my question: What are your favorite anxiety relief videos? I guess I'm mostly interested in yoga. I am already walking for exercise and I'm going to start a strength component to my exercise routine starting tomorrow, but I would like to start using my yoga videos (or Youtube) to help with my anxiety. I have Barbara Benagh's Yoga for Stress Relief and just completed a 50-minute practice a few minutes ago. It helped! However, I'm hoping to find something a bit shorter (although Barbara's practices are pretty easy to shorten as needed). I also like Rodney Yee and have quite a few of his DVDs, but I'm open to other instructors.

Thanks everybody!

Donna

I am a huge fan of yoga but I have actually found that Qi Gong is better at calming my mind. I love Lee Holden's 30 Day Challenge, which are only 6-8 minutes each. He has a YouTube channel as well if you wanted to try one out. Ten years ago I never dreamed I would even try Qi Gong, let alone like it. But then, that's how I felt about yoga like 30 years ago!

Anyway, I'm sorry you're dealing with so much stress. I'm glad it's not to the point of panic attacks bc those are definitely not fun.Wishing you the best!

If you're open to considering qi gong, I highly recommend Lee Holden's Qi Gong for Anxiety: https://www.holdenqigong.com/product...g-for-anxiety/ . It is also available on Amazon.

How about some YT options? Can't beat the price and you can try different instructors to see who you click with - or not. All of these are under 30 minutes and most are under 20 minutes and several clock in closer to 10 minutes. I haven't done all of these videos, but have sampled videos from all of these instructors.

Qigong Mood Lifter - YoQi/Marisa Cranfill (one of my favorite YT practices): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr5vt2-iaeo

There are boatloads of yoga, meditation and qi gong YT options if you just type in "yoga for anxiety", etc.

I'm glad to hear you're going to be able to discuss this with your physician to see if he/she has other recommendations. Best of luck with your appointment tomorrow.

Yin Yoga can be soothing. Have you tried any Yin Yoga? Here are a few to try:

Apologies in advance if this is not relevant to you, but....

2. (putting 1st): May I ask if this could be hormone-related? I had what seems like very similar experience in my late 40s (now 52). I am a naturally anxious person, but I was having bouts of anxiety that would come on spontaneously with no catalyst. HRT (estrogen + progesterone therapy) helped a ton with that.

1. In addition to the various videos recommended, have you tried meditation? I have a thousand recommendations.

I know you requested yoga suggestions but walking helps me with anxiety. I listen to a book and between that and fresh air it really helps settle me down. Last November I had a really bad experience at work and I was so upset. I went home and put on my walking stuff and walked 4 miles. I cried the whole time and where it didn’t fix my feelings it really helped settle me. It gave me perspective on the situation.

I hope the yoga suggestions help you.

I recently took a vacation from my vitamins/supplements to try to fix an annoying nerve issue. It had the unexpected effect of causing my anxiety to plummet to pre-pandemic levels.

I'm concerned that learning something new will stress me out right now. However, I might check it out at some point soon, since you and at least one other believe it might be helpful.

Thank you for your concern!

Thank you for your "favorites" list! I will check them out. I know I could do a search myself, but was wanting favorite practices that VFers find helpful for relieving their anxiety. That way I don't have to wade through a bunch of stuff that might not be all that great.

My appointment is later today. Keeping fingers crossed that my doctor will have some helpful suggestions, too.

You got so many great suggestions for videos. I just wanted to add that in my personal experience, any meditations or yoga practices for anxiety that start with "visualize every bad thing that happened to you today," "tense up your whole body" etc. as the intro to the practice, make my anxiety worse. The objective is to teach to you relieve the stress and anxiety with the soothing stuff that follows, but it only elevates me to the point of Joni-O-ing it and then feeling worse. I want respite from it, plain and simple.

Just my experience. Good luck to you!

Let me recommend Pauline Mckinnon's Stillness Meditation Therapy.

It's a specific method of meditation, that focuses on creating a sense of ease in the body. Here's a link to a short version on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8AhG9uHGuQ

Her website has downloads available for longer meditations, but they're quite similar. Before I had access to the longer downloads, I'd just pause the meditation recording at a certain point (when she stops talking for a bit) and then set a timer to continue on, and pick up the recording again to finish the meditation with her guidance.

Another issue I cope with is insomnia, and I've found that listening to a guided meditation is helpful when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Another source for guided meditations is Caroline McCready, I really like her Bone Deep sleep meditation. It's designed to be listened to as you fall asleep.

It's on Youtube, but I purchased downloads of a number of her meditations for my MP3 player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1j2Uhzc08s

In terms of medications and supplements, I do think timing matters. I've recently adjusted a dose of medication, and find that taking it at bedtime isn't helpful. Guess my body doesn't like coping with that as I'm trying to fall asleep.
