Congrats on your new dumbbells. I used to love buying new dumbbells. DH thought it was hilarious that I got as excited about buying dumbells as some women do when buying new jewelry or shoes.

You do not look pathetic. I believe men assume we can't be strong if we don't look like a weightlifter. I am chunky, so men assume I'm not very fit since I don't look it.

I once put a pair of 25-pound dumbbells in my cart at Dick's. There were two men nearby having a conversation. I noticed they got quiet so I looked at them and realized they were staring at me with their jaws on the floor. I think one of them even made a comment about my strength.

Why do men assume we can't lift anything? Women are constantly lifting and carrying small children (kids/grandkids). Do men think they are weightless?

Use those dumbbells in good health and enjoy them!

I was in my early 40s and had several dumbbells in my cart at Sports Authority. The clerk asked if I needed help getting them to my car, and I asked him (nicely), how he thought I got them into my cart? He paused, laughed, and said, “okay then.” I laughed too and it was fine. I think they were taught to offer help (to women) and I didn’t take offense, but I can see how it could rub people the wrong way. I can’t imagine how a man would react at this assault on his masculinity.

Enjoy your new dumbbells! I also get excited about new exercise toys!

I think it’s really nice when people offer to help. I don’t see it much at all around here. I think a lot of the time it has nothing to do with the person assuming you are too weak to handle the task. I held open the grocery store door for a guy the other day and he didn’t even glance in my direction let alone say “thank you”. I know a woman who chews out men that try to hold a door open for her or God forbid, they try to help her lift something into her SUV. She gets on Facebook and posts these long rambling posts about how men are always trying to keep women in their place. It makes me sad because I think many of these situations are just people trying to be polite and there’s not enough of that right now.

Whenever I buy landscaping or garden supplies at Home Depot, someone always asks me if they can help me put it in my car. I do thank them! But then say, "No thank you. If I can't get it into my car by myself, how in the world am I going to get it into my back yard?"

I agree. My SO knows how strong I am but he still gets heavy things for me in a store or here at home. I sit while he walks around the car to open my door. If I open my car door I never hear the end of it. He holds the door for anyone going in or out. He helps strangers in a store if they can't lift or reach something. It used to be called manners but manners are lacking in today's world. Yes, we are strong but sometimes it's nice to let a man do it. It makes them feel good.

Yeah, my 8s 10s and 12s were flaking so much I was concerned my cats might lick them up—plus I got a splinter from one of them. So I finally replaced them. Now I don’t know what to do with the old ones.
