3 mini reviews (Denise A., YogaFusion, Kickboxing)

Mini-reviews on 3 new or newer videos:
Denise Austin's Pilates for Every Body
Yoga Fusion: Yoga Fusion Basic Steps to Great Abs
Kick it! Knockout Beginner's Workout (Terrie Reeves)

Pilates for Every Body: 45 minute workout broken into segments and uses a dynaband.
7 minutes: dynamic warm up - basically a series of flowing movements with lots of chatting - some are yoga-based, others are just gentle stretching and swaying
18 minutes: Pilates Floor Series which focuses on the abs and utilizes the resistance band (which is recommended to be 5' in length) to also work the upper back.
7 minutes: integrated upp adn lower body - this uses the dynaband a bit (upright rows, bicep curls with variations to work the hips/legs as well) and also incorporates the Pilates side-lying series for the legs in a standing position
6 minutes: cool down stretch
I haven't done the video, but have watched it. It looks pretty good - organized. Denise is by herself - and is chatty as usual. She doesn't falter between exercises and I think this is because she is by herself. I look forward to trying this video (I need to get a dynaband) because the upper back/shoulder work will dovetail nicely into the physical therapy I am doing for my upper back. I hope to squeeze it in this weekend sometime. Again, it looks to be a pretty decent workout for the beginner / intermediate pilates enthusiast.

YogaFusion: Basic Steps to Great Abs 30 minutes
Starring: Teigh McDonough and Ross Rayburn
(Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Ross is the same Ross that is in Kathy Ireland's Absolutely Fit.) The workout offers two to three variations of each exercise for varying viewer ability. Basically it is a combination of a few Pilates exercises intertwined with yoga poses, including a brief boat pose series, V-sit, planks (very short - definitely not Cathe) and a few other poses. The set is nice, the music not really noticeable. My biggest complaint is the constant reminders to 'offer your heart' or 'soften your heart' ... essentially the more spiritual side of yoga, which is a big turn off for me. However, it is fairly user friendly. I have only viewed it but was impressed with the variety of modifications offered and the emphasis on correct breathing. Just wish they'd left the spiritual stuff out. The ending includes a relaxation sequence, but very brief. Teigh and Ross trade off leading the video and Teigh shows the modifications.

Kick it! Knockout workout for beginners - Starring Terrie Reeves
I found this a few weeks ago at Sam's for something like $8.49 or so. Thought I'd try it. It's a 50 minute tape geared for the beginning kickboxer. The workout length is 30 minutes and is preceded by an instructional section. The set is a checkerboard floor of black and white tile with a raised platform for some exercisers offering modifications in the rear. Vaguely reminds me of TaeBo - the original set. Anyway, Terrie really whoops it up in this video - and I mean a LOT. Lots of whooping. If you don't like to hear it, you won't like this video. That aside, it is a pretty decent workout and she offers beginners modifications throughout. There are about 20 participants in the class of all ages and sizes, male and female. They all work up a pretty good sweat. I haven't had time to do this video but hope to try it out one morning soon. Hadn't seen anything on VF about this one so I thought I'd toss it out there.

Denise Pilates for Everybody at KMart

I saw it today at KMart for 9.99. I picked it up but in the end I didn't buy it. I am trying soooo hard to buy DVDs now (except of course for the Winsor Pilates set which hopefully I will get soon).

D. Austin's Pilates for Everybody

I haven't done it yet,either. Received it yesterday, be-lated
b-day gift.
I like the format, the background pastel colors. I think it is
a very creative routine. She states these are her favorite
pilates videos.
The warm up is a lot of flowing side bends and arm movements
The standing up segment uses a chair. There are some
Tai chi moves, one interesting one is your legs are spread in
a V and you bend down and using your hands/ draw a figure
8 on the floor.
She constantly reminds you to zip up your abs..which i like.
She over all is more calm, as calm as Denise can be...
Pilates floor wk has roll ups and downs, scoop and hollow
out your abs, she does a move and then progressively shows
you the next level. She does this thru out the video..so it is
one you could grow with.
I really liked the circular sit-ups, bicycle type moves, Teaser is
in here.
The dyna band movements look really effective...trunk
rotation twists, leg circles using band inner and outer thigh
exercises, etc.
There are some swimming moves, mermaid and she does
the dolphin yoga pose. Lots of ballet leg positioning for various
moves...tree type passe~, there are lateral raises, bicep
curls using dyna band called Strong man, demi squats, deltoid
moves, a sideways sword type lunging move. Then a move
called balancing stick.
Overall, i liked it and get this at the very beginning of the
credits, it list LISA WHEELER as the FITNESS SPECIALIST.
This isn't a review, i wrote some notes while watching it and
had quite a few interruptions..so my notes were out of context.
I liked the Total body effect and i find Denise's toning exercises
to be what is does best. Very creative~I really liked it~Ellie
