I was able to stay fit and in a size 6/8 entirely with running and swimming (my diet back in the 70s/80s & early 90s was utter crap), UNTIL I hit 35.

In 5 year increments, it seems, WHAT I eat grows more important when it comes to both health and size. I workout for health. I eat for health (and all the fun eating can be) and to fit in my wardrobe.

This. I really think it's all about compliance. You can read all the studies in the world and do the 'best' scientifically proven workout in the world, but if you can't stick to it...

I just tuck that nunchuck thing into the waistband of my yoga pants, hold the Wii remote in my right, and walk/jog to the music. Yes, it counts steps very well, and it's fun!
