do swim goggles/snorkel mask damage your eyes?

I always wear a snorkel and mask for swimming. Someone at the pool told me today that the mask "sucks" on your eye and damages the retina and/or cornea. She told me her daughter had a torn retina from wearing swim goggles. I looked online and found some info on the skin around the eye possibly being damaged (wrinkled, small broken blood vessels, redness) from the pressure of a mask or goggles but nothing about damaging the eye itself.

Golly, I sure hope not. My kiddos use swim masks every time they swim.
One would think, with the amount of swimmers that use goggles, that if it were true, it would be widely known. I mean, have you ever seen a warning label on goggles that say "danger: suction can cause eye damage"?

Just wondering aloud here...

I swim a lot and wear goggles, never had a problem. I think the chlorine would be more apt to damage my eyes if I didn't wear them.

I've been wearing goggles for 40 yrs while swimming. No problem for me!
Maybe the child's retina was detaching before the goggles?

I've worn mask and snorkel to swim for 35+ years and never suffered any problems. I guess if you created too much of a suction in an attempt to get a seal you could get into problems but I have many friends who dive for a living and don't experience this.

I think your pool friend is a bit of an alarmist.

I scuba dive and the only times I have ever had problems is not releasing the pressure when going down deep, and have never had that problem with snorkeling.

In 29 years of practice, I've never had a retinal detachment secondary to swim goggles/masks. There would have to be direct trauma to the eye itself to detach the retina.

Protect those corneas from the chlorine and wear those goggles!
