Getting healthy and losing weight are two different goals. If I were faced with this choice, I would choose getting healthy, first. Some fat will shrink off as you get healthy; once healthy, losing weight becomes easier because you feel better and have more energy.

For me, getting healthy requires exercise that increases my strength, my balance, my flexibility, my cardio-vascular and muscular stamina. Once those duckies are in a row, losing weight happens much more easily (and the weight you'd lose would probably be from fat more than from muscle, and when I need to lose weight, I never want to lose muscle mass--so I focus on how my clothes fit and how much energy I have and not the scale).
