OT and A New Game:Win10 and Cortana and MS Edge, Oh My ...

Well, I wasn't informed as to the upgrade timetable for me, yet; but early information on this new operating system is available.

I am going with the first information I am seeing—so this isn't MY review AND it could be biased.

[Maybe some people over here could be grateful for that, I don't know ...]

My personal opinion (and I know we each have one): is that I had been looking forward to the demise of the Start screen TILES of 8.1 (a stable system, and one that I've gotten used to), and the Start screen TILES still exist. There seems a voice-activated module, called Cortana.

I've no touch screen, but do have a key-free touchpad with some universal zoom capability via finger-spreads. I kept getting the TILES slung in my face because I lack the touch sometimes ...

It's a new Game, folks!!

If you're Ready for Windows 10 right now:

If it's an upgrade and not a clean-install (if you have Windows 8.1, it is an upgrade)

And Now I Have Windows 10 - about 22 Hours earlier than Planned

So far, so good. Windows 10: Where do I start?

Windows 10 makes it tough for me to use my old browser, Internet Explorer ... I can get to it, but it refuses to allow me to plant it on the Start Screen for easy access ...

I realize Internet Explorer is being phased out, but it had old and new Favorites on it. I am using Microsoft Edge, and bypassing Cortana where I can. Not all my data files were backed up, but my entire restore point WAS successfully backed up to USB drive (32GB - I had no great enhancements to Windows 8.1 to start with) by me before I upgraded

Kaspersky did not automatically assume compatibility with Windows 10 herein; and my wireless access is not, um, publicly shared via this device.

I have to check on if everything else transferred - such as my apps.

But, no major mishaps in this upgrade occurred.

Look, I admit Partial Defeat ...

... at the hands of Cortana.

I did get Cortana to do speech recognition (somewhat automatically), although it has trouble with parts of my accent that had been developed out in the Rocky Mountain West and an impressionable age ... [sigh!]

what could you say about something still in Beta by the time it got to me ...?

Nearly all other problems ... solved!

Update: Incompatibilities ....

Two months after installation, Windows 10 worked its "magic" and, according to my technical support (I am still under warranty with my non-Windows-itself notebook) started to cause all apps to be enabled at startup.

I knew there was some sort of problem when the light on the switch, ever since installation of 10 two months ago, would not self-shutoff after soft shutdown.

I did not catch the rest of the problems until just now, when the system semi-continuously soft-beeped as if it were "overheating" or had a "BIOS problem" [How should I know what's wrong?] ... a hardware problem that did not affect startup ...

Maybe those who want it, wait for the hard release of Windows 10 from now on ... (in time for Xmas?)
