I’ve been reading more about these anti-aging researchers that have their own podcasts and make the rounds on others, and people that promote particular ways of eating that are contrary to what is considered established nutritional science, and I’m more and more convinced that a lot of them are modern day snake oil salespeople.

This might not change whether their mg/kg protein recommendations are correct, but I have purged my podcast list quite a bit. It’s too hard to know which parts are good science and which are speculation and trying to sell me something.
Thank you for this.

Dr. Chatterjee recently interviewed Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. I found it to be interesting and fits with the topic of this thread.

Um, for those of us with ADD, what are some of the main points in the video?

I’m the same. Here’s the intro…

My guest today believes that the single biggest problem with our health these days is not that we carry too much fat but that we don’t carry enough muscle. She believes that if we start to focus and prioritise our largest organ – our muscle – we can burn more fat, improve our body composition, decrease our risk of disease and increase our energy levels.

Dr Gabrielle Lyon is a family medicine and osteopathic doctor who has specialised in geriatric care. What she’s seen and learned as an end-of-life physician has led her to investigate the importance of skeletal muscle as a means for people to live longer, stronger and better lives. She now focuses her practice on what she calls Muscle-centric Medicine.

In this conversation, Gabrielle makes the case that the quality of our lives is in direct correlation to the health our muscles. Gaining muscle, she explains, won’t just help us slim down. It can change metabolism, reversing insulin resistance and other risk factors for chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. And it’s equally important for reducing sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), protecting our skeleton, improving mobility and balance, and reducing fall risk with age.

Many of us aren’t aware that we lose muscle mass from as early as our 30s - so for most of us, it’s something we need to prioritise immediately.

Gabrielle explains what type of protein we should be eating and how much, we cover what exact combination of exercise Gabrielle recommends to her patients and we discuss why for women in their peri-menopausal years, muscle loss is a very real problem that needs addressing.

Gabrielle is realistic about the amount of effort her recommendations require and I find it really refreshing that she’s not trying to sugar-coat anything to make it more palatable. She’s someone who deeply cares about the health of her patients and wider society and wants to empower us all with practical knowledge that will help improve the quality of our lives.

I really enjoyed my conversation with Gabrielle – I hope you enjoy listening. Gabrielle also has her own podcast The Dr Gabrielle Lyon Show https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-dr

It was a really good podcast with Dr. Lyon. She asserts that we should be lifting weights 3-4 times a week, and eating 30-50 grams of protein per meal. With meat being a much more effective protein source than plants. She says muscle is the organ of longevity. It's the frailty of sarcopenia and osteopenia that steals away the joy from our later years. Muscle is also our glucose 'sink' and thus vital to healthy metabolism. The quality of our muscle has a huge effect on our quality of life.

Thanks for the summary!!

I don't eat meat, but even if I did it seems like it would be hard to eat 30 to 50 grams of protein per meal without eating a lot more calories than my body needs. I think that was already mentioned upthread. Did she elaborate how to accomplish the goal without consuming excess calories?

Yep, I agree 100% about muscle mass being critical as we age. I'm sure doing my best in that area. I do weight training 4+ times a week at this point.

I do eat meat, but nowhere near 30 to 50 grams of protein per meal. That would be the equivalent of eating an 8-ounce filet mignon at each meal!

I eat meat and still often struggle to hit 80 grams of protein in a whole day!

Looking around her website, it looks to me like she is another promoter of basically a low carb or paleo diet, even though she doesn’t say so. Very high protein, no grains, they are a dime a dozen. Animal protein with every meal, some additional fats, and some vegetables.

She has meal plans that she sells, and a bunch of supplements.

Everything old is new again.
But I do like that she and others in that world promote strength training.
