(((Tina))) I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
I bought my first pair of walking poles after my third back surgery. I had a lot of nerve damage, so I needed help walking, but I didn't want to use my walker outdoors. That was back in 1997. I now own 3 pairs, one of them is at my parents home. The poles that I use all the time is my Leki trekking poles. I run or walk with my dogs out in the trails and I still use them every single time I head out the door. They have been a godsend.

Tina, Sierra Trading Post (who has a VF support link) has trekking poles:
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/s~t...es/?perPage=24 The poles that I have at my parents are the Leki Nordic Walking poles, and they're perfect for walking around in suburbia.

My very first walking poles was the Exerstrider:
http://www.walkingpoles.com/content/view/28/40/ Livestrong does a comparison between Exerstrider walking and Nordic Walking: http://www.livestrong.com/article/36...ordic-walking/ It's a good reference page to bookmark. When I bought my Exerstrider back in 1997, you gave them your height and they sent you a pair of poles according to your height. They are not adjustable at all. Their newer models might be. The Exerstrider is also heavier than my Leki Makalu. My Leki poles have held up really well, I believe I bought them around 2000. Again, Tina, I highly recommend a pair. They have been invaluable to me. They really do help with physical limitations. I know back then I used to get snide comments; is it snowing!?, etc., but I didn't care.

Walking poles are very big in Europe, esp Scandanavia. Like another poster said, the way to use them is counter-intuitive. They need to be behind you, I guess. There are a few how-to's on-line from some of the vendors. Here's a set of videos from an American manufacturer, Keen:
