Inner thigh work & hip pain

Anyone else experience hip pain from inner thigh work? I already no longer do lunges because of my hip flexors, so in the past whenever a workout included lunges I would substitute standing inner thigh leg lifts using a band. What could that hurt, right? Apparently my left hip! So I no longer do those. The other day one of my workouts included plies. Never noticed a problem with those in the past, but now again my left hip is not happy. Like to the point I have a stabbing pain on occasion and the leg almost gives out. Do I need to forever refrain from any inner thigh work??

P.S. Weighted squats with my legs parallel are not a problem at all.

Do you stretch your hips, quads, and hip flexors? This is a really good and gentle psoas/hip flexor stretch. I have an issue with my right hip flexors being chronically tight, it affects my knee, and this helps a lot. You can use a foam roller or a yoga block.

I do stretch regularly, but could always do more.

Thanks.

Yaya - I have the same problem as you, especially my left hip!

Yogapam - Thanks for the youtube stretch workout! I will sure try that!

If you have stabbing pain and your leg gives out, it could be a nerve or spinal problem. I'd have it checked out.

I have the same problem, especially when the instructor wants to do plies while tucked. When I feel a twinge, I back off the move and do something else. I don't go that deep in plie, either, or try to turn out my legs as much as more flexible people do.

Plies, especially weighted ones, can be hard on the hip joint if you push too hard. Many ballet dancers end up needing hip replacements when their careers are over.

Can anyone recommend some hip-friendly workouts that I can do until this settles down?

I have recovered from a few injuries/issues and always found the pool my best option for rehab. Do you have access to a pool? You can do aqua-size, deep water walking/running with a floaty belt, or swim lengths. I do some lengths with a foam float between my thighs and using my arms only to give the lower body a rest.

Good idea. Unfortunately I don't have access to a pool.
