Question OFF TOPIC: Knitting

I am not crafty at all so I'm pretty much clueless on this topic. My teenage niece is learning how to knit on her own via youtube videos. I'd like to get her a nice book with good pictures, instructions (patterns??) she can refer to. She's a pretty fast learner and a very creative kid. Any suggestions?? I want basic but nothing that looks too childlike. Thanks! (She's at that age where she wants to be considered adult and "not a kid")

Is she left or right handed? I'm left handed so the options are limited in that realm. Right handers will find an abundant sources.

Have her sign up on Ravelry.com - there's a billion patterns, forums, groups, etc. It's *the* online knitting, crochet, spinning & weaving place!

You don't have to be fast, just keep moving forward.

Yep, Ravelry is free, but there are patterns for sale there too.

Weird thing about handedness & knitting.

My mother was left handed and taught both my sister and I to knit. Not sure whether she taught us left or right handed.

Both my sister & I did the same thing:
When we picked up our knitting early on, we weren't sure which direction to knit to & just worked out what to do with the right side facing us - whichever way we picked it up. Very quickly, we both learned to knit comfortably with the right side facing us the whole time - no flipping around. So stocking stitch to us, is "all knit" which makes logical sense. Fair Isle & Aran is MUCH easier that way as well.

We discovered that each of us do this decades after we were competent knitters.

I've never known which way is supposed to be right or left handed knitting - which direction each travels.

Thanks! I'd still like to get her a book as this will be a Christmas present. I want to get her something that's not a gift card this year.

I wish I could help. Unfortunately, I learned to knit fifty-six years ago and don't really use books for patterns. I get most of my patterns for free from yarn shops online, such as yarnspiration.

I do have a small suggestion, however. You might want to scroll through the easy knit Afghan patterns to find a blanket pattern made of blocks, with each block a different pattern. That way she could improve your skills with each block. Also if she's just learning to knit, she'll need lots of knitting needles , different sized needles , shs'll need straight needles and circular needles. She'll need yarn needles to sew her projects together. And she'll need lots and lots and lots of yarn. If she's going to make a single pattern that requires lots of yarn, all that yarn has to be from the same dye lot. I only add all this in case you want to splurge and give her the yarn.
