Trochanteric bursitis

I was diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis (right hip) last year. I have had ongoing issues for a while now. I want so much to get back into fitness, but I am concerned about flareups. Leg lifts (floor work) really seem to aggravate it. I would love to know what other folks with hip bursitis are doing. I know everyone is different, but I really need a place to begin. I suspect there is going to be a lot of trial and error, but I really don't feel it's beneficial for me to just do nothing. Thanks.

Thanks,
Ginger

Ginger, do you mind if I ask what your symptoms are? Last May I started having stabbing pains in my hip. By fall the worst of the pain had subsided but I still have trouble at night sleeping on my side.

Hmmm. I have pain on the side of my hip, which travels up into my rear end and down into my knee at times. I do have trouble sleeping on my side as well. Walking in my neighborhood can aggravate it too. I got an injection when he first diagnosed it and it helped for a while. I am trying to avoid getting another one if I can.

I have a bit of bursitis in one hip, but it's not severe. For me, walking is the best medicine. I can tell if I slack off on my walking routine.

Don't know what variety of bursitis I have, though, and how that might effect treatment options.

Normally, I would advise seeking out a sports physician and getting physical therapy. I say a "sports physician" because regular doctors don't get it that you want to continue to work out. But, these aren't normal times.

I have a torn labrum in my left hip and I think some bursitis also. I'm OK with most floor work.

My favorite exercise for glutes, hamstrings and lower back is glute raises.

Hi Ginger

I'm so sorry you are having pain.

Have you watched this and tried any of these stretches?

I developed a nasty trochanteric bursitis after a major uphill hike several years ago. It was brutal! What ended up really helping me was IMS dry needling & strengthening my glutes which my PT told me were a big part of the problem. Unfortunately access to up close treatments like IMS are problematic right now. I did various glute focused exercises including clamshells and crab walks with a resistance loop. He started me slowly. But that was the diagnosis from my PT, your root issue might be quite different. I also do lots of stretching regularly, including my hip flexors, psoas, & quads. I haven’t had any significant flare ups since.
