OT - Need opinions please

I have a long necklace with a locket that has my dog’s picture in it. I uploaded a photo and the company I got the necklace from put the photo in the locket. It turned out really nice and a friend of mine has always admired it. She got married last fall and I thought I would take one of the wedding photos of her and the groom and surprise her with a locket of her own. She never sent me any wedding photos as promised so I asked if she would send me a couple. It took her awhile but I finally got them. Unfortunately, the ones she sent didn’t work well for what I wanted to do with them. I had a card she sent out after the wedding to all her wedding guests and it had a couple photos of her and the groom. I tried using one of those for the locket and it turned out really well. When she called to thank me for the locket, she said it now made sense why I had asked for photos. I explained that they didn’t work well in the locket and that’s why I used the other picture. She said that was fine, but then she said, “But why would you ask for pictures and not use them?” so I now know she’s annoyed with me. I told her the company I got the locket from has a retail store in her city and she could take it and have them switch photos, but I can tell she’s unhappy. Part of me feels bad that she’s disappointed and part of me thinks it’s a gift she didn’t even know she was getting, so she should just be happy - she must like the photo I DID use because she had it on the cards she sent to all the guests. Do you guys think I have any reason to feel bad?

Hell NO! I think she sounds ungrateful for the wonderful gesture of you putting so much thought into such a precious gift! I would have LOVED it. It's not your fault she didn't send you useable pictures. You were trying to surprise her and she should appreciate the amount of thought you put into the gift.

I think she is being rude and ungrateful. You surprised her with a lovely and very thoughtful gift.

graciousness, a lost skill

I think what you designed for her was very thoughtful. I think the recipient should explain herself further and whatever she was trying to communicate to you could have been done kindly and clearly.

Based on DD's wedding photos and her strong feelings on them, I think that some brides just have a preference for how they look in their pictures.

I think it's very, very, very difficult to predict what a bride might like, especially in a personalized gift. This is why I always use the bridal registry, LOL.

Regardless, she should have accepted the gift with grace, and just set the gift aside if she doesn't want to wear it at this time. If she wished to use a different photo she could have had the picture swapped out after your gracious offer.

I'm hopeful that you will extend her even more grace by forgiving her and not allowing it to come between you.

You went above and beyond and have no reason to feel bad, at all. She has the problem in how she reacted towards you and that was really uncalled for! People can be strange and maybe she didn't mean to hurt your feelings, but she should have been thankful and either not said anything more about it, or chosen her words more thoughtfully. Maybe she had an off day, and is not normally like this, but you were kind and a special gift like that any bride should have loved!

I wouldn't worry about it. You did a nice thing and you told her why you didn't use the pictures she sent - they didn't work. She didn't even know why you requested the pictures in the first place and you didn't have to have the locket made for her. Sounds like a very nice gift.

That was a beautiful and thoughtful gift and you have nothing to feel bad about. It's just a shame your friend wasn't more gracious about it.

It sounds like a thoughtful gift. Don’t let her rude response ruin the joy you had in giving it. It’s in her hands now, so she’s free to appreciate it or not.
