I previously thought that the Firm's cardio segments in which you are using lighter weights was AWT. But when I do a workout like NYC, which does not have cardio, just strength training, now THAT's what I'd describe as AWT!

I LOVE that workout, btw!

AWT examples

I think Slim Series fits the AWT category better than most of Cathe's workouts. Other possibilities are:
lots of Firms, FitPrimes, TLPs/TLTs
Hollywood Trainer: Kickbox-Bootcamp, Cardio Sculpt
Karen Voight: GWW, Burn & Firm
possibly Jari Love's workouts (don't know them well)

I know there are tons of others but they're not springing to mind right now.

I don't know about NYC-- I guess I'd consider that a fast-paced weight circuit that elevates the heart rate through the pace of the movements (and the PHA effect).

Hi NoraKate! And "mrow" to N'Toth too!

how about the (loved or loathed) Joyce Vedral workouts?
At least one of them claims to be weight training at an aerobic pace

Slim series is borderline. It may be considered AWT for a beginner. Because Cathe focuses more on isolating muscles during weight work, her workouts are just circuits. The TLPs and the classic firms are probably the best examples of AWT. Jari Love's RTTC and 1000 also are borderline AWT. The new CIA with Sharon is a tough AWT workout (hare style). NYC with the fluid leg segments and non-traditional arm movements also has a AWT effect. What I look for in a AWT workout is for the HR to approach anaerobic during the weight segments (preferably compound and superset) to be followed by recovery back into the aerobic zone during the cardio segments.

A related phenomenon to AWT is PHA ("peripheral heart action"), in which the skeletal muscles that are being worked alternate between upper and lower body, supposedly requiring the heart to pump harder to shuttle blood back and forth around the body. This is supposed to be another way in which working with weights can produce cardiovascular benefit. It can be done with AWT or just through cleverly designed weight circuits.
I didn't know that! Thanks...

NoraKate: Well, you know that I loathed the Joyce Vedral workouts, so I don't think I remember enough about them to say what they were! I'd guess they're fast-paced circuits, but not really AWT. But you should ignore me and wait for someone who actually knows them to comment.

Soapmaker: Thanks for the clarification and added information! I didn't think of NYC as very AWT-like, but it's true that when I tried it I was looking for something else (an opportunity to lift heavy using the video as a guideline for exercises rather than weight and tempo-- for which it didn't work that well, for me).

Pam: I should have inserted a disclaimer: I'm just passing along claims that I've read elsewhere, so I hope there's a grain of truth of them if anyone else wants to make use of them!
