Weight Training Fundamentals

by David Sandler

This book is a great basic handbook that contains the essential exercises for each body part.

It is well-written and easy to read. The exercises, again, are your standard exercises but the book includes black & white photos and tips on the exercises (machine and free weights).

What I really like about it is the last portion of the book where David Sandler (a professor of kinesiology) describes how to develop your own program and defines and explains how to train for muscular endurance, strength, size or power, along with maximum lifting. He describes different routine types (superset/multiset), circuit training, preexhaust training, postexhaust training, drop sets (the downward side of the pyramid, also called strip or burn sets), negative training, forced repetitions, slow training and the pyramid system... plus the concentration (blitz) system, split training, push/pull... and how to put your own program together. He even includes some sample workouts of each type. Definitely worth looking at if you get a chance!

Instructor comments: Author David Sandler is a professor of kinesiology at Florida International University. Writes clearly and gives great examples.
