How much money do fitness instructors make?

I have been considering getting certified - but I wonder if it's worth my while. Does anyone know what the rate of pay is for an instructor? personal trainer? someone who teaches things like pilates one on one? I have no clue. thanks!

I worked for 24 Hour Fitness teaching 1 hour Turbo Kick class and got payed $15 per class. If I got my AFAA or ACE certification, they would have raised it to $20 per class.
I think Billy Blanks charges $100 an hour for personal training session I recall.

It really depends on the individual gym, how much experience you have, and where you live. I've been teaching for about 1 year and I get between 20 and 25 dollars per class. There are instructors who have been teaching for years who make about $40+ per hour so alot of it is based on experience. People who freelance as personal trainer can get alot more than that, but alot of it depends on how much experience you have, you definitely have to work your way up.

This varies greatly, depending on where you live. In NYC at high priced gyms, instructors get $70-100/per class. In addition, if they teach many classes, they may even be able to get health insurance and a 401(k)!!! Moderate priced gyms pay $50-80 per class. Conversely, in LA, the rates for instructors are really REALLY low: $15-20. Sometimes for the same NYC chain!

from what I have heard, it is not a particularly lucrative field.

You heard right! I get paid anywhere from $14 at the student rec center (but I do that because I love it!) to $20-$35 per hour, depending on the type of class. It really depends on your area and the gym in question.

I get paid $13.00 an hour as an ACE certified personal trainer at a University gym. Needless to say, its not my day job LOL!

The group ex instructors get $20 per one hour class.

That's low

Depending on the class I teach I receive $35-45/hr. I do it for the love, not the money
