addendum

Hi Susan!

I can fill in a few blanks. Before vBulletin we used WebBoard, and before the interim software it was Allaire Forums. Before that (right after we got our domain name) I used a freeware Perl script called WWWBoard. The very first edition of the Forum, however, was a simple guestbook script in my personal Web space w/ my ISP, so all the posts loaded on one page! How many posts/day did we get back then, does anyone remember? 10 or 12, maybe?

The thought of the "interim software" still makes me shudder.
Thankfully, things have only gotten better and better.

I came here in April, 1997 when WWWbulletin was used. It was fairly simple, but decent. I agree that the "interim software" (which lasted for quite a while) was ATROCIOUS!!!!! Anybody remember how long it was around?

The one before 'that'

I found the VF forum in October '98. Towards the end of that software's
life, quite a bit of time was spent in the 'underground'. I'm trying to remember how the underground worked, but my memory fails me. Anyone else remember?

I think the interim forum lasted from June '99 to January '00, too long.

A reminder

I thought of the Allaire software as the "cold fusion" software. It had some nice features, but remember how it used to slow down to an absolute crawl à la Webboad?

I remember when the page was still on Wendy's ISP page. All the threads used to just kind of scroll off the screen and you had to scroll over to the right to read the threads that got lots of responses. Sure has come a long way!

I've been around since the first half of '97, so I remember most, I think. That interim stuff was the worst. And who from the earlier days can forget reading new posts in the "underground". Ack. It was a riot, but so hard to follow.
