I started working out at last 5 days/week since the early 1990s, first as a long distance runner and after overuse injuries ended my joy, VHS workouts (Collage catalogs). I have consistently worked out at the same frequency since, modifying/adapting for injuries and/or age

I love reading all these great inspirational stories. Each one is unique yet we all have a common thread. Love VF!

40 years this year. Started lifting whatever I could find after I found out how much I loved my arms and legs after starting marching band in high school.

Most of my life! I followed a PBS yoga show in my childhood, and my mother was always buying something to help us both with our weight issues. We had the ab wheel, ropes that attached to a doorknob, a Mark Eden bust developer. I was always outside playing. When I got my first job I joined a Jack LaLanne Health Club in NYC. I've had memberships at YMCAs, a Nautilus gym in 1980 which was my first taste of weight training, the women's places (Gloria Stevens et al), Butterfly Life, World Gym, now Planet Fitness.

I became a home videot, meaning tapes and DVDs, not just TV shows, in 1983 when a VCR rental place opened in an electronics store near us. It had a beaded curtain with a porn section in back. The first tapes I rented were Jazzercise and Kathy Smith Ultimate workout. Then I began buying tapes - the Nautilus workouts with Stacey Benson, Kathy Smith and a couple Jane Fondas. One day I got a Collage catalogue in the mail and the rest is history.

I've always been a sporadic exerciser, having internalized the importance of exercise from reading a book about its importance when I was around 11 years old. Funny how there are little transformational moments like that in life.

I've always fancied myself an athlete, all evidence to the contrary. Scuba diving was my obsession in my 20's-30's, hang-gliding was my obsession in my 30-40's, so life was active enough without consistent exercise routines.

If I had to pick a turning point where exercise became a cornerstone in my daily life, it would be in 2002, when I broke a femur. The PT basically never stopped. If I don't work out, I get out of whack and something will start aching. When I do work out, I feel amazing.

Me too! I'll be 64 in August; I was 16 when my sister & I started following a Debbie Drake (?? I think that was her name; will google later) routine we found in Woman's Day magazine, so 48 years for me. BTW, that sister is 10 years old than I am & she still exercises 5 days/week with a friend (Richard & Leslie mostly).

Awesome thread! Love all these stories and this community. Also love that this made me realize I've pretty much 'worked out' in some form or another my entire life! Dancer as a kid into my early 30's along with other activities like running, Pilates, etc, was turned onto The Firm on VHS by a college friend and still used those sporadically when I wasn't dancing.

Eventually I went back to The Firm and then discovered VF and my collection of workouts and love for all different forms of exercise grew from there. I've never really had an extended period of time where I didn't exercise, even while injured, because I'd find something I was capable of doing.

I'm grateful for VF and all I've learned over the years...I'm sure it's been a huge factor in my personal consistency!

Yup!

45 years and still going at it 5 days a week! This group has been there for me through most of those years. Thank you to all of you!

I am now 70 and grew up in the era of no sports for girls so I didn't do much till college. In 1968 I read Ken Coopers "Aerobics" and became convinced of the value of exercise. I started running which I did inconsistently till I was 35. At that time I committed to regular exercise. I continued to run (which arthritis has taken from me) and added other forms of cardio and did Jane Fonda, etc. Got seriously into step which I still do. Added more strength training in my 50's mostly the FIRM. Just had a knee replacement and am ramping back up.
