I'm with, Kyra. Varying your route as much as possible is a good idea. Also, carry some type of protection, and if you have a dog, walk him/her with you. They'll think you are the greatest person in the world.
I actually should take my own advice. The only option for me is running my dogs out in the trails, which is just across the street from our home. But, it's pretty desolate out there, especially the deeper into the trails that I run. So once the "paranoid" feeling sets in, I change the time of day that I take my dogs out there.
