Sex Appeal and selling videos

Hi Ladies

I was doing a Kathy Smith tape a few weeks ago and they did a few close ups of her bust and a few f her butt hanging out of the back of her leotard and later on I was on Tracy Anderson’s web page and I really got thinking about sex appeal and selling videos. Anyway, I wanted to check with the ladies at VF and get your thoughts on sex appeal and videos? Who would you say is the biggest offender and pushes the limit? Do you like it hate or care less? Who do you think was the first instructor to use sex appeal to sell videos?

I think Kathy Smith is probably the first on a mass scale to use sex appeal. On eBay I’ve scene one poser with her in a swim suit and her boos hardly fit! I’ve also scene a few of her in a very revealing bikini. However, I think over the past 10 or so years she’s toned it down.

Denise Austin I feel has also pushed the limit over the years I was doing one of her upper body tapes and she had on a very tight raveling bikini.

I think the Firm early on maybe pushed the limit but I think they did it in a tasteful way. I think they just really wanted to show the beauty of the female body.

Overall it doesn’t offend me as long as its done in a tasteful way. I look at the quality of the tape. Does it give me a good workout? Are the exercises efficient and challenging? I don’t buy tapes based on how little the instructor has on

Sex appeal doesn't sell videos to me, although it might drive me away if it's overdone.

Oddly enough, many of the instructors I've tried who've said, "do this sexily," or "get ready for that bikini," have been surprisingly clothed. Not sure what that means...

Some of Janis Saffell's covers have been, well, let's just say that Hardcore Kickbox Circuit's will make you think of another kind of hardcore at first glance.

I love elegant videos. I like Cindy Crawford, Raquel Welch, Shiva Rea. I enjoy looking at tastefully made dvds, like the aforementioned ones. I also enjoy soft music and lighting. Sounds simplistic, but I appreciate beauty in everything, even when I work out.

Not sure if I answered the question because I don't see this as use of sex appeal, just good taste.

It doesn't really bother me. Generally it seems like "sexy" videos have very high production values and that's always a plus in my book. Also, sometimes the outfits, pouting, etc. can be unintentionally hilarious which only adds to a video's fun factor, imo. However, if a video's obviously intended for a different audience and the "workout" is clearly an afterthought, too easy and/or poorly designed, then I would steer clear (thinking of the Girls Next Door workout, Carmen Electra and things like that).

DeltaMan, I'm going to disagree with you about Kathy Smith. In the 80s, the height of sexually alluring workouts, Kathy refused to arch her back or stick her butt out on the covers of her videos. I read more than a few interviews about this, and I've never seen her wear or do anything that was remotely sexual, much less a bikini.

Fast forward to now, and she still strikes a more athletic pose on her workouts covers. I'm wondering which workout this is you previewed where they focused on her bust and butt because I've owned most of her stuff in the past and I've never, ever seen a crotch or boob shot of her. *shrug*

I'm more focused on results than overtly sexual stuff, maybe because I started doing videos in the 80s and not the more athletic 90s and beyond. Old FIRMs don't bother me like they do some younger vidiots because for the time, FIRM was very mild.

By far the worst I have ever seen is in Jeanette Jenkins' Sexy Arms, Abs, and Legs. It's not Jeanette that's overdoing it (although her over-usage of the word sexy is a bit much) & the clothes aren't bad. It's one of the background exercisers. I'd posted about it a month or so ago & you can see a bit of her antics on the clip at the hollywood trainer site. She's like that through the whole video, touching herself, tossing her head so violentely I'm surprised she didn't get whiplash, come hither sex kitten looks to the camera, etc... It is really bad. I meant to return that DVD to Collage, but I still have it. I just never got around to returning it. I'll likely never do that workout again after doing it only once. The workout itself is actually very good, but that background exerciser is just so blatantly slutty that I can't ever view it again. It's disgusting.

I openly admit to wanting Gilad's Cuts and Curves back because he does this sexy thing with smoothing back his hair Is it intentional? I think not. But very effective. And Rodney Yee is also yummy in a speedo.

However, Cuts and Curves is still a good workout.

I don't think I answered the question

ETA: Lissalaurel, I will be happy to take that workout off your hands LOL! I remember you posting about it, and I think it would be a hoot to watch. Jeanette is someone that I actually believe says "sexy" in regular conversation, she's just that goofy. I remember some time back that some VFers said the something similar about Julie in the cool down for Christi's Solid Gold Step. She was very come hither.

Janis Saffel's 'cleavage push" on some of her covers (wearing a low-V top and crossing her arms under her bust to push it in and out) comes immediately to mind.

When I visited Tracey Anderson's site and saw what looked like close to soft-core porn shots, she immediately lost my interest.

Just chiming in to say that some of the reviewers here, at Collage and Amazon comment on the skimpiness/appropriateness of instructors' outfits, but it's never bothered me. You have to wear workout clothes to work out...

And if Scott Cole, Michael Olajide and others want to take their shirts off, that's OK with me too.
