From A Beginner's Point of View

by Tiffanee Saunders

Going to the Firm was a great experience for me. I got the chance to meet some really great people from all over the country who love exercising to videos as much as I do and who also happen to be "Firm Believers; I had the pleasure of meeting Susan Harris, Tracie Long, and Heidi Tanner; I got a really great workout and personal training session with Heidi Tanner, and I learned a lot from others on the trip and the Firm about fitness. However, one of the best highlights of my trip was spending time with my mom.

My mom (Rhoda) is over 50 and new to the fitness lifestyle. However, she is making an effort to incorporate regular exercise and good eating habits into her life. Recently, she has started walking with some friends at her neighborhood mall. Just for the fun of it, I asked her if she would be interested in going to the Firm. She does not have access to a computer so she did not know about the videofitness website and she had never heard of the Firm but she was willing to go and give it a try. Plus, we both thought we could make a good mother/daughter weekend out of it.

At first she was a little nervous about working out at the Firm. I sent her a tape about a month before the trip so she could see what a Firm workout was like. The tape did frighten her a little bit (keep in mind, this is someone who is completely new to working out). However, once she got to Charleston and met everyone else there, her fears subsided some. She still comments to me about how nice the group on the trip was.

The Firm instructors (Susan, Heidi, and Tracie) were really comforting to her too. They told her that she did not have to lift weights or do anything she was uncomfortable with. I believe it was Susan who also told her that she would help her modify some of the exercises in the masterclass.

The Firm instructors had her positioned in the front of the class, just in case she needed some extra help. When the workout began, mom got off to a good start with some simple marches and going up and down the step. I wish I could tell all of you that she made it through the workout with the rest of us, but about five minutes or so into the masterclass she decided that it was a little too much for her and she sat out the rest of the time.

This story does have a happy ending though. Seeing the Firm Believers do the masterclass has really motivated her to workout. The next day, we went shopping in Chareleston and she bought a step. I told her that I would send her some of my beginner step tapes and she has expressed an interest in purchasing the new Firm Basics tapes. Going to the Firm has made her realize that she needs to do strength training and aerobics. She had no idea that you loose so much muscle a year after the age of thirty and as mom told me, she wants that muscle back. I haven't seen the new Basics tapes yet, but if the instruction in these tapes are as good as the instruction my mom received at the Firm, by using these tapes, I believe she will get some of that muscle back.

After the workout was over, mom kept telling me about how proud she was of me. She said she had no idea that I was so strong. I told her that even though she did not complete the workout, that I was proud of her too. Making the desision to incorporate exercise into her life and keep it in her life is one of the best decisions she could ever make. After all, I want her to be around for a long time. When the Firm's Basics tapes go on sale, I'm going to get her one. She really wants us to make another trip to the Firm again in the near future and this time she says she will be ready. All I can say to the Firm Believers on the trip and to the Firm is thanks for motivating my mom so much and watch out. She will be back and stronger than ever.
