Tae Bo Junior

The video starts out with a nice series of stretches for the kids - quite thorough as compared to the original Tae Bo videos. There are standing and seated stretches followed by marching in place. He then moves in to punches and kicking with slow, deliberate moves to start each series, followed by faster-paced moves. He keeps the punching/kicking movements in the 2 to 3 sets of 8 reps for each series. This portion of the workout is about 20 minutes long. He then brings the heart rate down and moves to the floor for some basic crunches (with knees in the air), pushups (4 sets of 8) and some leg kickbacks for the glutes. Then he ends with a brief tai chi cooldown.

I found the video to be fun but not overly challenging for me as an intermediate exerciser doing this with my six year old daughter, but it was a nice change of pace (and would be a great workout if you were recovering from an illness and didn't want to miss out on a workout but couldn't get back up to speed real quick). The music is fun ("Believe" by Cher and a couple of Michael Jackson songs) and the kids all seem to have a great time. He does stop several times to remind kids to drink water and to keep a good attitude and to push themselves for self-improvement. He also speaks to the parents that he believes karate and physical fitness help build children's self-esteem and self-confidence. He encourages parents to workout with their kids or at least supervise them while performing this workout to correct their form. He recommends parents go through the basic instructional video tape with their children before trying the workout - although his form pointers in this video are very good. I purchased this video at Target for $19.99.

Instructor Comments:
Billy has created this workout for kids. The workout is approximately 30 minutes long and appears to be geared for children ages 5 and up. In the video there are several kids who appear to be 14 or 15 and also a few small girls who look like they are 3 or 4 years old. Shelly Blanks is also present to assist the kids on their form. Billy occasionally speaks to the at-home kids about form, attitude and spirit.
