Turbo Jam: Learn & Burn

Chalene Johnson
Year Released: 2005

Categories: Boxing/Kickboxing/Martial Arts

This DVD is generally included as part of the Turbo Jam introductory package (Turbo Jam: 5 Rockin' Workouts). It is designed to provide both a Tutorial of some of the basic Turbo Jam moves plus a short (17-minute) beginners-level Turbo Jam workout. The DVD is chaptered, so you can skip between the various tutorial segments or skip through them right to the workout.

In the 12-minute Tutorial, Turbo Jam instructor Chalene Johnson is joined by two background exercisers--her younger sister, Janelle, and her friend, Brian. Johnson goes through the "Elite 11" Turbo Jam moves, breaking each one down step by step and then practicing the exercise several times before moving on. The exercises are as follows: 1) Turbo Tuck, 2) Pump, 3) Zig Zag, 4) Strike, 5) Twist, 6) Row, 7) "W", 8) 7 Step, 9) Shake & Shed, 10) Capoiera Step, and 11) Wheel.

The workout covers virtually all of the moves introduced in the Tutorial. It starts with a 4.5-minute warm-up sequence that begins with the Turbo Tuck. Johnson then practices all four punches (jab, cross, hook, upper). She adds additional moves to this, including the Pump, Zig Zag, Twist, Row, Shake & Shed, and Wheel. Next comes a practice of kicks, including the side push, back push, and roundhouse; Johnson uses the "W" arms while performing the kicks. The routine concludes with a quick cool-down.

I don't think that Learn & Burn is 100% necessary prior to starting Turbo Jam--I first did Turbo Jam Cardio Party years ago without every having watched the Tutorial--but it is helpful. Furthermore, the workout is a nice shorter option; it is perhaps not as fun as some of the other Turbo Jam workouts, as there are no kick-punch combos, but it is a good straightforward routine. I wouldn't necessarily recommend purchasing this DVD alone, but it is nice to have as part of a set.

Instructor Comments:
Chalene certainly has plenty of energy! I can take her in small doses, but she has a BIG personality that tends to get to me after awhile.
