Starting Out Workout

This is a beginner’s workout, which provides about 30 minutes of floor aerobics and 20 minutes of basic toning and stretching. The cover calls this a low-impact workout, but it does include some low jumping. After the warming-up there are four aerobic sections. The choreography is very easy to follow, and Kathy goes through each step before adding on to it. There are body checks (focusing on correct execution of the moves) and three heart rate checks. There is also something called Foot lookin’, in which the camera focuses on a back view of foot movements – not a bad idea for beginners. Kathy emphasises safety and the need to work at your own level. After the aerobics, there is a short section on seated and standing posture, which I think is a good idea, as lots of tapes talk about it but don’t actually demonstrate it. This is followed by what she calls Body Awareness – toning and stretching of the muscles responsible for good posture (buttocks, inner thighs, abs, back). The toning section might be outgrown more quickly than the aerobics section, and from the jukkie pastel clothes you can tell it’s an older video (1987), but it’s still a good beginner-level workout (it’s not as intense as her Fat Burning Workout). I’d give it a B.
