Enter the Zone

It's been a long time since I've read this book but I was surprised to see it hasn't been reviewed, so I thought I'd offer my .02 on it.

Basically, it explains how we are all getting fat because of the big NO FAT craze of late which has caused tons of people to start eating more and more carbohydrates in their efforts to avoid fat. He points out that many of these carbohydrates are loaded with sugar and are much higher in calories. He also explains how *some* fat is good for your body and goes into the myths carbo loading, etc. Also, breakdowns of certain foods glycemic(sp?) index and how they are broken down by the body, entering the bloodstream, etc. He goes into simple vs complex carbohydrates, starchy vs. fibrous, etc., also how food affects our performance (exercise, strength, etc.)

The diet is classified as eating in blocks which is supposed to simplify counting calories and grams. One carbohydrate block contains 9 grams of carbs, one protein block contains 7 grams of protein and one fat block contains 3 grams of fat. You are given so many blocks to eat per day. You can find out how many blocks you should eat based on your measurements and activity levels on his web site www.eicotech.com.

All in all, to paraphrase something he said it's what your grandmother always told you, eat your fruits and vegi, don't eat too many starchy foods and watch your sugar intake. One more comment regarding the amount of protein recommended, once you get your individual recommended number of protein blocks, it's really not as high as it's been hyped up to be in the media.
