Mara Carrico, Yoga Journal (Editor)
Still wondering what's the difference between Kundalini, Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga? Wondering what kind of poses might help your aching back? Afraid you have to become a vegetarian if you want to do yoga?
For anyone with an interest in learning about yoga, this is THE intro book! The editors of Yoga Journal have produced a basic beginners guide that talks briefly about the history of yoga, about the different branches of yoga, (of which Hatha Yoga, the physical component which is used to prepare the body for extended meditation, is only one) and the different styles of physical yoga practice (Iyengar, Bikram, Kundalini, etc..) Following these sections are detailed descriptions and photos of standing, seated, and inverted poses, as well as sections on forward bends, backbends and twists.
Yoga Basics is a terrific reference, and especially welcome to one who is a little tired of the bright yellow "...For Dummies" series. [Don't get me wrong, they tend to have great basic information, but I am not a Dummy and I don't like having to wear sunglasses just to read a book cover!]
