Bob Greene and Oprah Winfrey
Make the Connection
Ten Steps to a Better Body and a Better Life

I have read a lot of fitness books, and did not expect to like this one. However, the book surprised me with how motivating it was, and how much information it contains. I strongly recommend it, even to people who are long-time exercisers and have read almost every fitness book around. It is highly "readable" and very informative.

To describe the book: it starts with Oprah describing her story, which is inspiring. This is followed by a number of chapters by Bob Greene providing basic information. Then he introduces the ten steps for losing weight, getting in shape and "making the connection." Not only does he explain what you have to do, but also WHY. I really enjoyed his discussions of metabolism. I credit this book with inspiring me to add more cardio to my routine, and for getting me to crank up the intensity of my workouts. The information on diet didn't do much for me - I am just not a person who will ever count fat grams in my life. Also, I wish he had included a discussion of strength training - I personally believe it is necessary for fitness. Finally, I didn't really get into the "connection" aspect of the book, in part because I have been a fitness "convert" for almost a decade.

Overall, I think it is an excellent, motivating and entertaining book. Oprah's experiences with weight loss provide a good lesson on the importance of fitness, and the dangers of low calorie dieting. Bob Greene does a good job of explaining how weight loss works.

This book was very "real" and motivational. It was real because Oprah wrote about her personal experiences with weight loss. She described her many failures that many people can relate too. It was motivational, because in the end, she came out great in all aspects. Bob Greene also gives his professional input to help give you tips on becoming healthier overall. If Oprah could do it, so can you.

This is my favorite book to lend to fitness beginners. The information on all subjects is complete and accurate. The Ten Steps are realistic and necessary. The writing is friendly and readable. Best of all, as we all know, Oprah has to "make the connection" every day of her life, just like the rest of us! Her failures and triumphs inspire empathy and offer genuine hope.
