Fitness for Dummies

Suzanne Scholsberg and Liz Neporent

This book is special to me. I bought it about 2 1/2 years ago, when I first plunged into the wonderful world of fitness. It was a motivator and a teacher for me at a time when I needed it.

The topics covered are: fitness testing, setting goals, how to find good sources of fitness information, nutrition basics and weight loss. Also, warming up, cooling down and stretching, using cardio machines, outdoor exercising options, a weight lifting primer, how to choose a health club, hire a trainer and make the most of your gym, how to exercise at home (including videos), good fitness investments, ripoffs, pregnancy tips, common injuries, travel tips and calorie-burning tips.

The fitness tests give you a good read on where you stand. The book also includes "goal sheets" that can be photocopied and used to plot short and long-term goals.

This book is honest and straightforward. It tells the truth about exercising and weight loss-they offer no magic bullets. Yet I find it a very motivating book-the authors' enthusiasm about fitness shows through, and the real-life stories they tell are great.

All in all, I recommend this highly for any fitness newcomer. It makes getting fit seem like one of the most fun things you can do. (And it is!)
